⏰ Countdown to incorporation

Pleased to report that incorporation of The Dream Society isn't far off. Until last week, that wasn't even possible as a result of the BCGEU strike. But with government offices back up and running, I've been notified that we can proceed with incorporation with The Dream Society (Penticton) as our name 🥳 Once that's done, we can get on with all the usual stuff like opening a bank account, registering with CRA, etc.

To be clear, I've not been twiddling my thumbs while waiting for this to happen. On the contrary, I've continue to meet with architects, community leaders, arts organizers, and the like. And along the way, I've assembled a list of people who I hope will form our founding board of directors. I'll be meeting with that group early next week. Among other things, we'll be discussing our provisional constitution and bylaws. (If you're so inclined, you can click on that link and add your comments.) After that I'll be filing the incorporation papers.

At this point, we've not finalized the purchase of the assets from the Co-op that previously ran The Dream Cafe, but I'm optimistic that this will happen shortly after incorporation. In particular, we are hoping to acquire the audio-visual equipment and intellectual assets (e.g., name, url, etc.). We're also hoping their liquor license can be transferred as it may take a while for us to get the liquor-primary license we ultimately hope to have.

We don't yet have an opening date, but I'm starting to think it may be a bit later than I'd originally hoped. In large part, that will depend on the scope of the renovations we do. At the very least, we need to renovate the kitchen. But at some point, we also need to re-do the bathrooms and, at the very least, freshen up the listening room.

Just so you know, we've still not gone public with this initiative (meaning that we've not yet sent out an email blast to the 1000s on The Dream Cafe's mailing list). Nevertheless, we've already sold 9/50 of our Diamond Memberships and 5/100 of our Platinum Memberships. Those are one year memberships but, of course, we won't start the clock on them until the cafe is open. If you're interested in getting one, you can find the details on our membership page.
