Ben Caplan is a Canadian folk musician from Halifax, Nova Scotia, known for his resonant baritone voice that can shift from lamb's wool softness to steel wool intensity. Born June 4, 1986 and raised in Hamilton, Ontario before moving to Halifax, Caplan started playing guitar at 13 and began his journey as an independent singer-songwriter at 19. A fateful meeting with blues legend Howlin' Wolf at age 11 left an indelible mark on his musical direction. Caplan often performs with his band the Casual Smokers, and has released multiple acclaimed albums including In the Time of the Great Remembering (2011), Birds with Broken Wings (2015), and Old Stock (2018). His 2018 project Old Stock was both an album and highly-acclaimed musical theatre production, earning six Drama Desk Award nominations during its seven-week Off-Broadway run and a New York Times Critic's Pick. Perpetually on tour since 2011, Caplan has played nearly 2000 concerts in 28 countries. His songwriting pulls from his Jewish heritage, mixing biblical imagery and klezmer-inflected melodies with contemporary themes.
