James Keelaghan, born October 28, 1959 in Calgary, Alberta, is a Juno Award-winning Canadian folk singer-songwriter known for his lilting baritone voice, driving rhythm guitar, and masterful storytelling. Now based in Perth, Ontario, Keelaghan began performing at Calgary folk venues while studying history at the University of Calgary in the early 1980s, and his academic background informs the narrative and historical depth of his songwriting. Many of his lyrics display concern about social problems and justice in society, addressing topics ranging from labor history to environmental issues with both compassion and intellectual rigor. In 1994, he won the Juno Award for Roots and Traditional Album of the Year for My Skies. Keelaghan's music bridges traditional folk music with roots revival and Celtic influences, creating songs with strong sense of scene and narrative that bring historical events and characters to vivid life. His ability to craft story-songs that are both historically grounded and emotionally resonant has made him one of Canada's most respected folk artists. He has released numerous acclaimed albums and has toured extensively across Canada, the United States, and internationally. Keelaghan's contributions to Canadian folk music extend beyond performing through his advocacy for the folk music community and his mentorship of emerging artists. His literate, socially conscious songwriting represents the best traditions of folk music as a vehicle for storytelling, social commentary, and cultural preservation.
