Jon McKiel is a Canadian singer-songwriter originally from Halifax, Nova Scotia, and later based in Sackville, New Brunswick, known for combining Halifax indie scene influences with deeply personal storytelling and haunting melodies. McKiel studied at both Halifax and Sackville's music communities, developing a sound that has drawn comparisons to fellow Halifax bands like Sloan and Wintersleep while maintaining his own distinctive voice. He is most noted for his 2024 album Hex, which was longlisted for the 2024 Polaris Music Prize, bringing his work to national attention. McKiel's discography includes notable releases such as The Nature of Things, adored across Canada for its bright mix of storytelling and indie rock, along with albums Tonka War Cloud in 2011, Memorial Ten Count in 2017, and Bobby Joe Hope in 2020. His music features rich descriptive lyrics delivered with indie rock arrangements that balance pop sensibilities with experimental elements. Beyond his solo work, McKiel collaborated with Julie Doiron, CL McLaughlin, Michael C Duguay, James Anderson, and Chris Meaney on the project Weird Lines, whose self-titled album was released on Sappy Futures in 2016.
