Coig, meaning five in Scottish Gaelic, is a Canadian Celtic folk music quartet from Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, consisting of Darren McMullen on guitar, mandolin, mandola, tenor banjo, bouzouki, whistles, flute and vocals, Rachel Davis on fiddle, viola and vocals, Jason Roach on keyboards and piano, and Chrissy Crowley on fiddle and viola. The band was formed in 2010 after being invited to perform at Celtic Colours, the renowned annual fall music festival held every October on Cape Breton Island. Originally starting with five musicians, the group took their Gaelic name and quickly made their mark on the Celtic music world. The band has earned rave reviews from audiences around the world and an impressive list of credits for their recordings Rove in 2017, Carols in 2015, and Five in 2014, including a Canadian Folk Music Award, a Juno Award nomination, and multiple East Coast Music Awards and Music Nova Scotia Awards. With fiery Celtic high-energy style as its musical core, Coig easily shifts between century-old tunes passed down through generations to original and upbeat compositions, featuring the band's range of over a dozen instruments including vocals, fiddles, piano, guitars, banjo, mandolin, viola, bouzouki, and whistles. Their ability to honor Cape Breton's rich Scottish Gaelic musical heritage while bringing contemporary energy and arrangements to traditional material has made them ambassadors for Celtic music, particularly the distinctive Cape Breton style that blends Scottish, Irish, and French Canadian influences into something uniquely Maritime.
