Northcote is the musical moniker of Saskatchewan-born singer-songwriter Matthew Daniel Goud, born May 17, 1985, whose distinctive intimate voice and genre-expansive career has made him an internationally known artist. Goud grew up in small-town Saskatchewan, where his early exposure to music was a mix of traditional country on AM radio and hymns learned at his childhood church. However, it wasn't until he discovered punk and hardcore music that he realized music's healing and therapeutic power. He began his career as guitarist and second vocalist of post-hardcore Christian band Means, regarded as an important contributor to the Canadian underground post-hardcore scene. Touring extensively through Canada and the United States for eight years, Means signed to California-based record label Facedown Records in 2006 before disbanding in 2008. Northcote first appeared as a solo project in 2010 with the album Borrowed Chords, Tired Eyes, marking a dramatic shift from hardcore to introspective singer-songwriter material. Since then, Goud has been a staple on the singer-songwriter circuit, blending the worlds of Americana folk, indie rock, hardcore metal, and devotional music. His voice has been compared to Bruce Springsteen, Joe Cocker, and Peter Gabriel, as well as a more refined projection of his former hardcore roots. Notable albums include Hope Is Made of Steel released in 2015 and Let Me Roar in 2020, with his latest album Wholeheart showcasing his continued evolution as an artist exploring themes of faith, doubt, love, and redemption.
