Mama's Broke are a Canadian folk music duo from Halifax, Nova Scotia, consisting of Amy Lou Keeler and Lisa Maria, who have spent over a decade in a near-constant state of transience, pounding the transatlantic tour trail. Formed in 2014 when they met through mutual friends during a car ride between Montreal and Halifax, the two spent the entire drive talking about music and realizing they were very in sync with what kind of music they wanted to make. Their style draws on bluegrass and Eastern European folk music influences, with Maria performing vocals, fiddle, mandolin, banjo, and guitar, while Keeler performs vocals, guitar, banjo, and fiddlesticks. The duo fuses traditional music from Celtic, Americana, and Eastern European sources into a powerful, cohesive sound. Prior to COVID, Mama's Broke toured relentlessly, accumulating appearances in their native Canada, the United States, Ireland, Indonesia, the UK, and much of Europe. They are most noted as winners of the Canadian Folk Music Award for Ensemble of the Year at the 13th Canadian Folk Music Awards in 2017 for their debut album Count the Wicked. Their second album Narrow Line, released in 2022, received a CFMA nomination for Vocal Group of the Year at the 18th Canadian Folk Music Awards and a Juno Award nomination for Traditional Roots Album of the Year at the 2023 Junos. With their exceptional musicianship, powerful harmonies, and ability to breathe new life into traditional music while creating compelling original material, Mama's Broke have established themselves as one of the most exciting duos in contemporary folk music.
