Kutapira, meaning sweetness in the Shona language of Zimbabwe, is a marimba and percussion ensemble formed in 2005 in East Vancouver, comprising five musicians who started playing this fusion of world music as kids over 15 years ago. The band members include Chris Couto, Sangito Bigelow, Jeremy Bryant, Kai Buchan, and Theo Vincent, all based out of Vancouver, British Columbia. They bring Afro-Cuban vibes together with the melodies of Zimbabwe, creating an original sound that combines the melodic traditions of Zimbabwean marimba with Afro-Cuban and West African percussion. The ensemble performs on traditional marimbas and an array of percussion instruments, creating a vibrant, danceable sound that honors African musical traditions while incorporating contemporary influences and improvisation. Their energetic performances showcase the joy and community spirit inherent in African music, with intricate polyrhythms, beautiful harmonies, and infectious grooves that get audiences moving. Kutapira has performed at schools, festivals, and community events throughout British Columbia, sharing not just music but also education about the cultural significance of the instruments and traditions they represent. With their commitment to musical excellence, cultural authenticity, and community engagement, Kutapira has become an important part of Vancouver's world music scene, introducing audiences to the rich musical heritage of Zimbabwe while creating something uniquely their own through their innovative fusion approach.
