Malika Tirolien, born June 26, 1983, in Marie-Galante, Guadeloupe, is a Guadeloupean-Canadian singer-songwriter and pianist based in Montreal who has become one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary jazz and R&B. She grew up in an artistic environment where her grandmother played piano, her grandfather was poet Guy Tirolien, and her father, a history teacher, was a self-taught multi-instrumentalist. She recorded her first studio song at age eight, accompanying her father's band. In 2001, at age 18, Tirolien moved to Canada to study music at the Université de Montréal, earning a BA in jazz interpretation. After graduating, she became an integral part of the Montreal music scene, including being a core member of the Kalmunity Vibe Collective and Groundfood. She is best known for her electrifying performance with jazz and funk collective Snarky Puppy on their Grammy-winning album Family Dinner Volume 1, with her performance on I'm Not the One receiving over 2.2 million YouTube views. In 2015, Snarky Puppy's Michael League invited Tirolien to become the lead singer of his new group Bokanté, which was nominated for a Grammy in 2020 for their second album What Heat. Her second solo album HIGHER, released in 2021, is a mix of R&B, Soul, Jazz, and Hip Hop defined as Highsoul and was co-produced with three-time Grammy winner Michael League. With her powerful vocals, multilingual abilities, and genre-defying artistry, Malika Tirolien continues to push boundaries and inspire audiences worldwide.
