John Gogo is a Western Canadian singer-songwriter from a large musical family in Nanaimo, also known as Snuneymuxw, on Vancouver Island, best known for writing and performing folk songs about the people, places, and true and tall tales of the Canadian west coast. After working as a Chokerman in a logging camp for two years, Gogo began his professional musical career with two of his brothers in the progressive rock band Graphics, touring around British Columbia and Alberta. In 1985, John switched gears and began playing his acoustic guitar in pubs, beer parlours, and at folk festivals, finding his voice as a storyteller and folk troubadour. He released his first album Coal & Wood in 1990, featuring original songs about his family history in mining and logging that captured the working-class experience of coastal British Columbia. John has recently produced and released his sixth album Western Balladeer, continuing his tradition of chronicling the lives, loves, and labors of people who built and continue to shape the Canadian west. He is the brother of Paul Gogo, known professionally as Gogo, who is the keyboardist for the Canadian rock band Trooper, and cousin of blues guitarist David Gogo. With his warm voice, evocative lyrics, and deep connection to the land and people of British Columbia, John Gogo has established himself as an important chronicler of west coast Canadian life, preserving stories and traditions through song for future generations while entertaining audiences with his wit, wisdom, and masterful musicianship.
