About

PUULUUP is an Estonian nu-folk duo established in 2014 by Ramo Teder (also known as Pastacas) and Marko Veisson, who have created a distinctive sound they describe as neo-zombie-post-folk. The name means wooden magnifying glass in Estonian and is pronounced poo loop. Rather than traditional instruments, the duo primarily plays the talharpa, a centuries-old four-stringed bowed lyre from northern Europe, directing its horsehair string vibrations through effects using alternative bowing and rhythm techniques. Teder is a multi-instrumentalist recognized for his solo project Pastacas, while Veisson has a background in anthropology including fieldwork in northern Ghana and a passion for West African music. Their music oscillates on the border of tradition and modern music styles, flirting with world music, underground and pop. In 2024, they achieved their greatest recognition when they won Eesti Laul 2024 and represented Estonia at Eurovision Song Contest 2024, placing sixth in the second semi-final with 79 points and qualifying to the final where they placed 20th out of 26 with 37 points. Their innovative approach to ancient instruments combined with modern production has made them one of the most exciting acts in contemporary world music, bridging centuries of musical tradition with cutting-edge sonic experimentation.
