About

Ryan McMahon is an Anishinaabe comedian, podcaster, and writer from the Couchiching First Nation, born in Fort Frances, Ontario, the oldest of four siblings and the first in his family to graduate from high school. Armed with a degree in Theatre and as a graduate of the prestigious Second City Conservatory in Toronto, Ryan's comedic storytelling style is fast-paced, loose and irreverent. As an Anishinaabe creative, comedian, writer, storyteller, and journalist, Ryan McMahon has devoted his career to initiatives and opportunities that foster and inspire a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between Indigenous peoples and this country. In 2012, McMahon became the first Native comedian to ever record a full mainstream comedy special with CBC TV (Ryan McMahon - UnReserved) and later that year made his debut at the prestigious Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal, where he was named to the New Faces list. McMahon's notable works include the three-time Canadian Screen Award (2024) nominated docuseries Thunder Bay (CRAVE TV, 2023), Teepee Or Not Teepee (CRAVE, Bell Media, 2021), Stories From the Land (CBC Gem, 2020), and the Thunder Bay podcast (Canadaland, 2023, 2020, 2018). Ryan is a proud dad to Ella, Jane, Sam, and Thomas, and lives in Hamilton, ON with his partner Madeline and children. Through his comedy, journalism, and storytelling, McMahon brings Indigenous perspectives to mainstream Canadian audiences with humor, honesty, and unflinching truth.
