About

Sammy Volkov was born in Edmonton and lived between Toronto and New York from 2010-2020, graduating from SUNY Purchase's prestigious Acting BFA Conservatory. His New York life primarily consisted of production-office work for HBO Max, Showcase, and Warner Brothers TV series while writing songs and performing them at Brooklyn open mics. When Covid hit, Volkov made the most impulsive decision he ever made by coming back home, getting the last seat on the last plane back to Edmonton. He describes himself as a musician and a singer-songwriter and audiobook director. Volkov took his first leap into recording with a 2018 independent EP. In late 2019, he contacted producer Harry Gregg and engineer Scott Franchuk at Edmonton's Riverdale Recorders, leading to an emotional two-year journey that resulted in Be Alright! released in December 2022. Be Alright! reached the number one spot on CJSR, was the first album to debut at number one on the CKUA Top 30 Chart, and within a month reached number 38 on CKUA's Top 200 Album Chart for 2022. Volkov has written and recorded a collaborative album with Dana Wylie called The Day Had To Come which topped Bandcamp's The Best Country Music of 2024 list and reached number 8 on CKUA's Top 100 Played Albums of 2024. He has shared stages with Boy Golden, Frazey Ford, and Mariel Buckley, appeared for the last two years at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, and performed at the Calgary and Canmore Folk Festivals. Sammy was awarded 2nd place for Penguin Eggs / Roots Music Canada Critics' 2023 New Discovery of the Year.
