Shakura S'Aida is a Canadian blues vocalist, songwriter and actress born in Brooklyn who lived in Switzerland before moving to Canada. S'Aida was lead singer of the 13-piece world music ensemble Kaleefah before embarking on her solo career. She has also performed as a backing vocalist for Rita MacNeil and Patti LaBelle, as well as with jazz musicians such as Jimmy Smith and Ruth Brown. She is a three-time Juno Award nominee and has won over international crowds in over 30 countries with her uplifting and vibrant umbrella of nouveau American roots soul. In 2021, S'Aida received the Maple Blues Awards Blues With a Feeling (Lifetime Achievement Award), recognizing her decades of contributions to Canadian blues music. She won the 2024 Her Music Award and won Female Vocalist of the Year at the 2010 Maple Blues Awards. Recent nominations include 2023 JUNO Award Nominee for Best Roots Album of the Year, and 2024, 2019, 2017, 2016, and 2015 Maple Blues Award Nominee for Female Vocalist. S'Aida independently released her first solo album, Blueprint, in 2008, followed by Brown Sugar in 2010 on Ruf Records, and a double CD, Time, in 2012 on Electro-Fi Records. Her latest album, Hold on to Love, was released after a ten-year gap and features collaborations with notable artists. With her powerful voice, commanding stage presence, and ability to channel deep emotion through blues, soul, and gospel traditions, Shakura S'Aida remains one of Canada's most respected and dynamic blues performers.
