Terra Spencer writes award-winning songs in Windsor, Nova Scotia and tours them across Canada and beyond, accompanied by guitar, piano, and the occasional barking dog. Terra Spencer spent much of her youth in a basement in Summerville, Hants County playing piano and secretly strumming her granddad's guitars. Raised on the mud banks of the Avon River, award-winning Nova Scotian funeral director-turned-songwriter Terra Spencer has won over audiences in Canada, the UK, and Germany since her 2018 debut. Before becoming a full-time musician, Terra worked as a funeral director. Her first job at the funeral home started with playing the organ, and her first foray into songwriting came more recently when she met country/folk artist Ryan Cook and got hired on as a backup singer, which is when she started writing in 2014. Bridging folk and Americana, Terra's lyric-driven original songs and gentle, hand-stitched instrumentation with fingerstyle guitar and piano draw from the intimate storytelling spirit of Jackson Browne, Judee Sill, and Ron Sexsmith. The release of Sunset is her fourth album in a career that started in 2018 with Other People's Lives, and her albums have been nominated for both Canadian Folk and East Coast Music awards. She has nominations from East Coast Music Association and Canadian Folk Music Awards, and wins from Music Nova Scotia and the Blues and Roots International Song Contest. With her delicate voice, literary songwriting, and unique life perspective informed by her work as a funeral director, Terra Spencer brings an uncommon depth and maturity to contemporary folk music.
