The History of Gunpowder is a freak-out ensemble from Montreal, now based in Vancouver, with an ever-changing cast of members that put on unpredictable, chaotic live shows. A staple of the Canadian live scene, The History of Gunpowder is devoted to constantly pushing the envelope on stage and in the studio and has built a community around them that consists of some of the best musicians in Canada. Morison initially started the band in Vancouver five years ago (as of 2017). Morison sings and plays guitar in the band, on top of being the founder and composer. He is the constant in a lineup which has had around 25 members to-date. Drawing inspiration from blues, soul, jazz, funk and punk, this group emerges as a delicate balance between order and chaos. With a full horn section, violin and pedal steel guitar, the group carries elements of jazz, afro beat, funk and experimental into a distorted, high energy symphony of gut-deep howls. Having integrated themselves in Montreal's thriving burlesque scene, the History's shows now often feature the city's finest burlesque artists and puppeteers performing to ever ambitious compositions. Not only is their music a mix of swamp pirate blues and growling vocals, but they have an ostrich as their mascot. The group has garnered an exciting international presence through their unique compositions and growling, gritty vocals with fan bases in Germany, Italy and America. With their wild, unpredictable performances and genre-defying sound, The History of Gunpowder represents the experimental edge of Canadian music.
