ActiveAbout
Zaki Ibrahim is a South African-Canadian singer-songwriter whose music blends R&B, soul and jazz into a distinctive contemporary sound. Born in British Columbia to a father originally from South Africa and a mother from the United Kingdom, Ibrahim spent her childhood as a 'citizen of the world,' living at different times in Canada, South Africa, the United Kingdom and France. Her father, Zane Ibrahim, was a pioneering radio broadcaster in South Africa and one of the founders of the influential community radio station Bush Radio. She moved to Toronto, Ontario in the mid-2000s and soon became a popular draw on the city's live music scene. Ibrahim released her debut EP, Shö (Iqra in Orange), in 2006 and has since emerged as one of Canada's hip hop and soul icons. She has collected two Polaris Music Prize nominations (shortlisted in 2013 and longlisted in 2018) and a Juno nomination for R&B/Soul Recording of the Year in 2009. Her first full-length album, Every Opposite, was released in 2013 to critical acclaim. Zaki Ibrahim independently released her much-anticipated second full-length album, The Secret Life of Planets, in 2018. With multiple singles reaching number one on NCI's Indigenous Music Countdown and additions to SiriusXM's Indigiverse and Spotify's Indigenous Editorial playlist, this emerging star continues to push boundaries in Canadian R&B and soul.
