Māmā Mihirangi is an Indigenous artist, songwriter, and traditional Māori Priestess from New Zealand known as the 'Queen of Loops' who utilizes a loop pedal to create intricate sonic landscapes entirely with her voice. From earth-shaking bass lines to intricately layered harmonies, rhythmic 'ska' chops, sensuous jazzy riffs and beat boxing – it's all done with the power of her voice. Singing in both Te Reo Maori and English, Mihirangi is a multi-instrumentalist who also plays percussion, keyboards, guitar and Tonga Puoro (traditional Maori instruments). The world was introduced to her music during New Zealand's Got Talent in 2012. She performs with a group called Māmā Mihirangi & the Māreikura, bringing together old and new forms of art to create a show that celebrates traditional and contemporary Maori culture and the power and talent of Maori women. The Māreikura symbolizes the virtue and strength of Indigenous women, showcasing traditional women's dance, weaponry, instruments, and Māori martial arts with contemporary choreography. Māmā Mihirangi's performances are both musical and cultural experiences, educating audiences about Māori traditions while demonstrating the vitality and relevance of Indigenous culture in the contemporary world.
