ActiveAbout
In Spite of Ourselves is a touring tribute concert that brings together Canadian songwriters and friends to perform stories and songs celebrating the music of John Prine, widely cited as one of the most influential songwriters of his generation. One version of this tribute features multi-instrumentalist/producer Doug Cox, Juno Award-winning Tom and Kalissa Landa from the Paperboys, fiddler and former Prine tourmate Kendel Carson, and Nashville/Vancouver Island songwriter/artist Steve Mitchell. Another touring version includes Blair Packham (The Jitters), Bill Craig (The Irish Rovers), Kirsten Jones, and 2X JUNO nominee Johnny Max. John Prine, who passed away at the beginning of the pandemic, was known for humorous lyrics about love, life, and current events, as well as serious songs with social commentary. This tribute show honors Prine's legacy by bringing his songs to audiences across Canada, performed by artists who were influenced by his work and who bring their own interpretations to his beloved catalog. The show has toured various Canadian venues including Tidemark Theatre, The Empire Theatre, The Spire in Kingston, and other theaters throughout 2024 and 2025, keeping Prine's music and spirit alive for new and longtime fans.
