About

The Naramata Community Choir has approximately 60 members and is a mixed voice choir singing a wide array of music from film scores to classical. The choir was founded by Carol McGibney in Naramata in 1962 by nailing a sign to the tree outside the general store announcing 'Wanted: Singers!' Carol led the choir until her retirement in 2008. The Naramata Community Choir is currently led by Justin Glibbery as Artistic Director, who joined in 2009. He runs the music programs at Penticton Secondary School and performs in various groups including his jazz combo 'Offramp.' The Naramata Community Choir Association is registered under the Society Act of British Columbia and is governed by a Board of Directors elected at an Annual General Meeting held in October/November each year. All rehearsals are held on Tuesdays at Penticton United Church commencing at 7:00 pm sharp and concluding at 9:00 pm. The choir has a rich performance history, including performing before Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip at the Coliseum in Vancouver and raising over $12,000 through their annual Christmas event for various local charities. The choir represents the vital community music-making tradition in small-town Canada.
