About

Annie-Claude Deschênes is a key figure on the Montreal independent music scene for almost twenty years, having made her mark as a singer, musician, songwriter, performer, and visual artist. She is best known for her work with Duchess Says and PyPy, two bands that are renowned as much for their electrifying performances as for their artistic sensibility. She lives and works in Montreal and studied sound design at Musitechnic as well as visual arts at Laval University. She started singing—or rather, screaming—at 16, developing a unique and powerful vocal style that has become her trademark.

Multidisciplinarity is an integral part of her creative process, as she continues her perpetual personal quest of uniting music and performance art by bending the pre-established conventions of stage presence. Something intense happens to her when she's onstage—she falls into a kind of trance that sometimes becomes uncontrollable, creating performances that are both captivating and unpredictable.

Over the course of her career, she has shared the stage with numerous internationally renowned bands, including The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, The Black Lips, The Hives, The Hot Snakes, and Buzzcocks. Duchess Says and PyPy's extensive touring has taken her all over North America and Europe, playing venues, bars, and festivals including Primavera Fest, Eurockéennes de Belfort, OSHEAGA, and Sled Island. Her debut solo album, entitled "LES MANIÈRES DE TABLE," was released on Bonsound and Italians Do It Better, with songs conceived during the confinement to fill the void of inactivity, showcasing her ability to transform personal challenges into compelling artistic statements.
