Barbara Josephine Bulat, known professionally as Basia Bulat, is a Canadian folk singer-songwriter known for performing with an autoharp. Bulat grew up in Etobicoke, Ontario, where her mother was a music teacher who taught piano and guitar. She is of Polish origin and a member of the Canadian Polonia. She attended the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, where she received a degree in English. In addition to her skills as a powerhouse vocalist, Bulat is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, recording and performing on electric guitar, piano, autoharp, ukulele, bass, and charango. Bulat released an independent EP in 2005 and was subsequently signed to Rough Trade Records, which released her full-length debut album "Oh, My Darling" in April 2007. Her second album "Heart of My Own," also produced by Howard Bilerman, was released in January 2010. Since releasing her debut, she has shared the stage with artists like St Vincent, Sufjan Stevens, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, The National, Michael Kiwanuka, Daniel Lanois, Beirut, Destroyer, US Girls, and Jim James. Bulat is a three-time Polaris Music Prize finalist and has been nominated for five JUNO Awards. "Oh, My Darling" made the shortlist for the 2008 Polaris Music Prize. "Tall Tall Shadow" was nominated for a 2014 JUNO Award in the Adult Alternative Album of the Year category and was a shortlisted nominee for the 2014 Polaris Music Prize. Bulat's music is characterized by soaring vocals, intricate arrangements, and emotionally resonant songwriting.
