Dany Placard is the stage name of Dany Gauthier, born in 1977, a Canadian singer-songwriter from Laterrière, Quebec, who has become one of Quebec's most respected folk artists. After classical voice training in Alma, he moved to Montreal to perfect his vocal technique at the Université du Québec à Montréal, building a strong foundation for his distinctive vocal style. Placard independently released his debut album "L'Agent Placard" in 1998, establishing himself as a fiercely independent artist from the very beginning of his career.
He then formed the band Plywood 3/4, with whom he released two albums, before returning to a solo career with the 2005 album "Rang de l'église." His dedication to authentic folk storytelling earned him significant recognition when he won the Canadian Folk Music Award for Francophone Songwriter of the Year at the 9th Canadian Folk Music Awards in 2013 for his album "Démon vert." He was again a nominee in the same category at the 11th Canadian Folk Music Awards in 2015 for "Santa Maria," demonstrating his consistent excellence in francophone songwriting.
His 2020 album "J'connais rien à l'astronomie" and the 2021 follow-up EP "Astronomie (suite)" feature contributions from singer-songwriter Julie Doiron, with whom he lives and tours. Placard, alongside Doiron, released their eponymous duo album "Julie et Dany" in 2022, recorded in their home in New Brunswick. This intimate collaboration brought Placard back to his folk roots, culminating in his 15th album "Avoir Su," released on September 27, 2024, continuing his prolific output and commitment to Quebec folk music traditions.
