Naya Ali is an Ethiopian Canadian rapper based in Montreal, Quebec. Born in Ethiopia, Ali immigrated to Montreal with her mother as a toddler. She grew up in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce. In her teens, she began writing poetry and immersing herself in the artistic community of Montreal's Côte-des Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough. Naya studied a BA in public affairs and Spanish, and then went into PR and marketing. However, she slowly came to realize that she needed to find her own possibilities, deciding to go back to music, almost as a form of therapy. In 2018, she released her first single "Ra Ra," which led to a manager and signing with Coyote Records. Ethiopian-born, Canadian-raised rapper Naya Ali burst onto the scene with her debut EP "Higher Self" (2018). She released the first half of her debut album "Godspeed: Baptism (Prelude)" in 2020. In 2022, "Godspeed: Elevated," the second part of a two-album project, earned her the English Album of the Year award at ADISQ and the Rap Album of the Year award at the GAMIQ. In February 2025, she released her bold second album "We Did The Damn Thing." In January 2021, she was named one of the winners of SOCAN's inaugural Black Canadian Music Awards.
