ActiveAbout
ALA.NI is a musician from London, England. Her parents are both originally from Grenada, and her great uncle was Leslie Hutchinson, one of the popular cabaret singers of the 1920s and 1930s. Leslie "Hutch" Hutchinson, was a king of cabaret in the 1930s who was mentored by Cole Porter, and his commemoration with a blue plaque in 2012 inspired ALA.NI to pursue her own artistic path. As a child she attended the Corona Theatre School in Hammersmith, followed by Sylvia Young Theatre School. She gained music business experience singing background vocals for a diverse range of artists including Mary J. Blige, Blur, and Andrea Bocelli. ALA.NI released her first album, "You & I," in 2017 on No Format! The album was written a cappella on her iPad. ALA.NI released her second album in 2020 titled "Acca." Her third album, "Sunshine Music," was released following an extended stay in the Caribbean. She has chosen to live in Paris, and feels more herself and more expressive there than in London. Her music features wistful, lovelorn tunes influenced by mid-20th century music, with passionate yet understated vocals recalling Judy Garland and Billie Holiday, floating over sparse arrangements. ALA.NI's unique vocal style and her commitment to honoring the cabaret and jazz traditions of her great uncle while creating contemporary music have made her a distinctive voice in modern soul and jazz.
