About

Mélissa Laveaux, born January 9, 1985, is an independent Canadian singer-songwriter and guitarist of Haitian descent. Born in Montreal to parents who'd fled the Duvalier regime, Laveaux was raised in the nation's capital, Ottawa. She has been writing songs since the age of 16. Laveaux earned an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Ethics at the University of Ottawa in December 2007. She split her musical education between her father's Haitian records and Top 40 radio before moving on to Joni Mitchell's folk and Broken Social Scene's indie rock. Her music has been described as a mix of roots, folk, and blues using her signature percussive finger-style guitar stylings and soulful vocals. In July 2006, Laveaux released her first album "Camphor & Copper" on the independent record label Malleable Records. Her second full-length album "Dying Is a Wild Night" was released in February 2013 in Europe. Her third album, 2018's "Radyo Siwel," was inspired by a 2016 visit she took to Haiti, and was long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize. Laveaux relocated to Paris in 2008 after the French label No Format offered to release her music. As of April 2024, Laveaux has been knighted Chevalière des Arts et Lettres. Festivals that have featured Laveaux include the Montreal International Jazz Festival, Cully Jazz, Donostia Jazzaldia, Festival du Bout du Monde, Les Francofolies de La Rochelle, and Sakifo Musik Festival in La Réunion Island.
