Sophia Bel was born in Michigan to a Québécois father and a Dutch-American mother. Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, she grew up in Quebec City (Cap-Rouge) before moving to Montreal in 2013 to gain independence. During her youth in suburban Quebec, her black fingernail polish made her a target of bullies, earning her nicknames like 'Emo' and 'Princess of the Dead'—names she has since reclaimed as an artist. After a year of working in cafés and playing music in Montreal, she decided to study jazz composition as a way to connect with other musicians. Sophia Bel emerged as one of Canada's talented and newest pop singers during the pandemic. She released her debut album 'Anxious Avoidant', followed by a deluxe edition in February 2023 featuring six previously unreleased songs. Her music draws inspiration from the early 2000s, blending alt-pop with nostalgic elements from the pop-punk and emo era. Bel has become known for embracing vulnerability in her songwriting while creating turn-of-the-century sounds that resonate with contemporary audiences. She has earned the moniker 'Montreal's Princess of the Dead,' proudly reclaiming a title once used to bully her.
