Frazey Obadiah Ford (born February 11, 1973) is a Canadian singer-songwriter and actress. She grew up in B.C., born into an American family marked by politics and poverty. Her parents fled to Canada after their resistance to the war in Vietnam aroused the interest of the FBI—at one point, they were protected by the Black Panthers. In 1973, Ford was born—the fourth and youngest child. Ford joined the Be Good Tanyas in their first year. Ford came to attention with the Canadian folk-country band The Be Good Tanyas in the early 2000s and became known as their lead singer, performing alt-folk and alternative country music with the Vancouver-based trio. Her solo debut "Obadiah" was released on Nettwerk on July 20, 2010. She has been on a soul music-inspired solo career for more than a decade. Vancouver singer/songwriter and member of alt-folk group, the Be Good Tanyas, who later launched a solo career singing soul and R&B-flavored roots pop. Born in Toronto in 1973 to parents who had fled to Canada during the Vietnam era, she grew up hearing music all the time from her "hippie family." She heard Otis Redding's Greatest Hits at 11 and "it struck me intensely how beautiful that [soulful] sound was". Later she discovered Memphis soul singer Al Green and "it changed the course of my musical personality and direction". Her three solo albums (the latest, "U kin B the Sun") have all been well received critically. Frazey Ford's soulful voice, her blend of folk, soul, and R&B influences, and her authentic, heartfelt performances have made her a distinctive voice in Canadian music.
