Leahy is a Canadian folk music group consisting of eight band members, all from the Leahy family of 11 siblings, from Lakefield, Ontario, who have been touring Canada and internationally since the early 1980s when they were known as The Leahy Family. Ancestor Michael Leahy arrived in North America in 1825 from Ireland and brought with him a rich musical tradition that has passed down through the generations. The evolution of Leahy as a group can be traced back to when their parents, Frank Sr. and Julie, taught the kids fiddle and step dancing, with the parents performing with the oldest children at local events before more kids joined in performances at fairs, exhibitions, and corporate functions throughout Ontario as The Leahy Family.
In 1985, they were the subject of a short film entitled "Leahy: Music Most of All" which received an Academy Award in the category of "Best Foreign Student Film." Their 1997 eponymous album "Leahy" seized the public's attention, and extensive touring (much of it as the opening act for Shania Twain) boosted the band to double-platinum sales in Canada. Leahy earned three Canadian Juno Awards, for Best Instrumental Group and Best New Group in 1997, and Best Country Group or Duo the following year.
Their emergence on the Canadian music scene in the late 1990s introduced audiences to the original Leahy sound—a foundation of strong stride piano, driving rhythm guitar, distinctive bass lines, and propulsive drumming, from which the band's extraordinarily brilliant fiddles, passionate vocals, and exquisite harmonies were launched to mainstream music listeners. The group's members are both instrumentalists and dancers, with several members skilled in fiddle-playing, while the female members often perform step-dancing-style routines and do most of the singing. To date, Leahy have sold more than 500,000 albums worldwide. It's a tradition that seems to continue today with Donnell Leahy and Natalie MacMaster including their kids in shows, while brother Doug guides his children as The Next Generation Leahy.
