About

Boy Golden is the stage name of Liam Duncan, a Canadian alternative country singer-songwriter based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Born and raised in Brandon, he moved to Winnipeg to pursue his musical career, initially as a member of the indie rock band The Middle Coast. When the band broke up in 2019, he went solo, releasing an album under his own name inspired by the devastating end of a relationship. It's a sunny disposition that led Duncan to create Boy Golden, an alter ego he debuted in 2021. The Winnipeg-based Duncan now presents himself professionally as Boy Golden, an indie-label twang-music persona who performs his own folk-country material. "I felt like I could write more freely if I used a character, rather than it all coming from Liam," Duncan says. About six months after he began writing songs as Boy Golden, another important piece arrived: the Church of Better Daze. The Church of Better Daze is a real institution Duncan founded, complete with a website where you can fill out a form to join the congregation, but it also doubles as the title of Boy Golden's debut album. His musical influences include artists like JJ Cale, MF DOOM, Gillian Welch, Townes Van Zandt, and Willie Nelson. He describes his style as featuring blues and country-tinged music with an optimistic, easygoing approach. Boy Golden's music offers a refreshing take on alternative country, blending traditional sounds with contemporary sensibilities and a distinctive creative vision.
