Hart was born on May 31, 1962, in Montreal, Quebec, the youngest of five children of Mina (née Weber) and Robert Hart, both Montreal natives. Raised in Spain, Mexico, and the USA, he returned to Montreal in his youth. Hart started singing at the age of 11, performing alongside the likes of Tom Jones and Paul Anka. In 1981, when he was 18 years old, Corey Hart recorded four songs on six cassette tapes and sent them to the Montreal Forum to the attention of Billy Joel and his touring band mates. This audacious move paid off, and Hart jumped in his car spent that summer in Long Island, where he recorded demos at famed recording studio Kingdom Sound, met his idol Billy Joel, played gigs with members of the Billy Joel band and started performing solo. "Sunglasses at Night" was released on November 11, 1983, as the first single from his debut album, 1983's "First Offense", and became a chart hit, rising to number seven on the US Billboard Hot 100 and entering the top 40 in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and West Germany. The video for the song was both a staple on MTV and won the first-ever JUNO Award for Best Video in 1984. He has sold over 16 million records worldwide and recorded nine US Billboard Top 40 hits. His sophomore album, "Boy In The Box", achieved Diamond status certification (1 million plus sales) faster than any other Canadian artist in history. In 2019, the singer-songwriter was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame at the JUNO Awards.
