Daniel Nwosu Jr., known professionally as Dax, was born on March 22, 1994, to immigrant Nigerian parents in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, making him a uniquely Canadian voice in hip-hop. Nwosu grew up in Ottawa before leaving for the United States to play college basketball. He attended Casper College in Casper, Wyoming, during the 2013-2014 school year, where he played on the basketball team. As a young man chasing the NBA dream, his eyes were firmly set on a basketball future, but while on a bus to a game, he took a crack at his first poem, and his path immediately changed.
In August 2018, Dax released his first EP entitled "It's Different Now," which features guest appearances from other rappers including O.T. Genasis and Futuristic. His original platform of choice was YouTube, where as an independent artist he amassed more than a million followers through his raw, emotionally honest rap videos. In 2019, he went on tour with American rapper Tech N9ne, followed by his own North American tour, resulting in more than 100 shows that helped him build a dedicated grassroots following.
On March 11, 2022, he released a new single titled "Dear Alcohol," written about alcoholism with devastating honesty. The song was eventually certified Platinum by both the RIAA and Music Canada, becoming his biggest commercial success. In August of that same year, Dax signed a record deal with Records, LLC and Columbia Records, transitioning from independent to major label artist. He received a nomination for Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the 2023 Canadian Country Music Awards. A self-made independent artist for several years, Dax has garnered over half a billion streams on his collective catalog and has amassed over 13 million followers across his social platforms.
