About

Toronto was a Canadian rock band formed in the late 1970s in Toronto, Ontario, best known for the top-ten Canadian hit 'Your Daddy Don't Know' and for writing and performing the original version of 'What About Love,' which later became a top-ten comeback single for Heart. The band started when singer Annie 'Holly' Woods met guitarist Brian Allen, with the lineup initially including guitarist/backing vocalist Sheron Alton, keyboardist Scott Kreyer, bassist Nick Costello, and drummer Jimmy Fox, though it shifted constantly through the band's life. Toronto signed with Solid Gold Records in 1979 and released their debut album 'Lookin' For Trouble' in 1980, which achieved platinum status in Canada. In 1981, the band earned a Juno Award nomination for best new group. Their album 'Get It on Credit' (1982) went platinum in Canada on the strength of 'Your Daddy Don't Know,' which reached No. 5 in Canada and No. 77 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned a Juno nomination for Single of the Year. A hard rock band with a glam-punk edge and a streetwise image, Toronto was known for its brash performances and the strenuous vocal style of lead singer Holly Woods. The band had just begun their Canadian tour when they were forced to dissolve due to the sudden bankruptcy of Solid Gold Records.
