Said The Whale is a Canadian indie rock band founded in 2007 by the group's primary songwriters, guitarists and lead vocalists, Ben Worcester and Tyler Bancroft. The band started as an exploratory songwriting experiment led by high school friends Tyler Bancroft and Ben Worcester. The band was formed in Vancouver and plays indie rock music. Before becoming Said The Whale, they released an album of acoustic home demos under the name WordsOverMusic, followed by another collection of home demos called Let's Have Sound in 2006. Their debut EP Taking Abalonia was released in 2007 and was re-released with seven new songs on June 3, 2008, in Canada as a full-length LP under the name Howe Sounds/Taking Abalonia. The band achieved significant recognition when Said The Whale won the Juno Award for New Group of the Year at the 2011 Juno Awards. During this time they were the subject of the CBC documentary Winning America directed by Brent Hodge and Thomas Buchan. Their current lineup consists of Worcester, Bancroft, keyboardist and vocalist Jaycelyn Brown, bassist Lincoln Hotchen and drummer Spencer Schoening. In September 2018, Said the Whale signed to Canadian indie label Arts & Crafts. Said The Whale's catchy melodies, thoughtful lyrics, and energetic performances have made them one of Vancouver's most beloved indie rock bands, known for their ability to craft songs that are both accessible and artistically ambitious.
