About

Skratch Bastid was born Paul Murphy on September 2, 1982, originally from Bedford, Nova Scotia. He began DJing at the age of 13, and by the time he was 16, he was already performing at clubs and events. Skratch Bastid earned his stripes as a battle DJ in DMC, ITF and Scribble Jam competitions, winning the latter three times between '03 and '07. A popular clip of Skratch Bastid competing at the 2001 Scribble Jam resurfaced in recent years, with its popularity primarily due to his skillful scratching of 'The Imperial March.' He is the first-ever Canadian DJ to be nominated for the Juno Award for Producer of the Year, receiving this honor in 2008 for his work on Buck 65's album 'Situation.' He was nominated for the Juno Award for Instrumental Album of the Year in 2016 for his collaborative project with Afiara String Quartet, titled 'Spin Cycle.' His demanding touring schedule has brought him all over the world, sometimes playing up to 200 shows a year in over 50 countries. He is a global ambassador and judge for Red Bull's annual Thre3style DJ competition. Since 2010, he has hosted daytime block-party style events in various cities called Bastid's BBQ, which has featured legendary DJs including DJ Premier, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and Pete Rock as past headliners.
