Shari Ulrich was born in San Rafael, California on October 17, 1951, and became a naturalized Canadian in 1981. She was the youngest of three children born to Esther and Stanley Ulrich. She picked up music early, playing violin at age nine. Ulrich moved in 1971 to Gibsons, BC, and in 1972 to Vancouver. She performed on the coffeehouse circuit around Vancouver in the early 1970s, and in 1973, she met up with Rick Scott and Joe Mock to form the Pied Pumkin String Ensemble. Ulrich left Pied Pumkin to back fellow west coast singer Valdy in The Hometown Band in 1976. The Hometown Band won a JUNO for Best New Group in 1977, though their tour support was suddenly cut off by A&M that same night. As a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, she plays violin, mandolin, piano, guitar, dulcimer, and harmonica. In 1989 she began performing in the contemporary folk trio UHF with Roy Forbes and Bill Henderson. She has garnered 2 JUNO awards and several nominations, an induction into the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame, and a 2014 Canadian Folk Music Award for English Songwriter of the Year. She's released lots of albums (26) and been in lots of trios (3). Shari Ulrich's versatility as a multi-instrumentalist, her warm voice, and her exceptional songwriting have made her a beloved figure in Canadian folk music for over four decades. Her ability to collaborate with other artists while maintaining her own distinctive voice has been a hallmark of her long and successful career.
