ActiveAbout
John Wort Hannam was born in Jersey, Channel Islands. He worked as a full-time public school teacher until 2000, and later discovered the guitar and his knack for writing songs in his early thirties while working as a teacher on the Kainai Nation in Blackfoot country. In 2001, John quit his teaching job and made himself a promise - he would try his hand at writing songs for 10 months or until his employment insurance ran out. Those songs would become his first recording, "Pocket Full of Holes," released in 2003. He is known for his story telling through music, with themes central to his music including life in Western Canada, and the human experience as seen through the eyes of working folk. He won two 2023 Canadian Folk Music Awards for both Solo Artist and Contemporary Album of the Year. He has released 8 full length recordings, and has a few feathers in his hat for his effort that included a Juno nomination, three Canadian Folk Music Awards, a coveted Kerrville, TX New Folk Songwriting Competition win and numerous other Canadian Folk Music Award and Western Canadian Music Award nominations. John Wort Hannam is a folk-roots songwriter currently living and singing about life and love's victories and struggles in Lethbridge, Alberta. John Wort Hannam's authentic storytelling, his focus on working-class experiences in Western Canada, and his ability to craft songs that resonate with everyday people have made him a respected voice in Canadian folk music.
