The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer are a Vancouver-based blues duo consisting of Shawn Hall (the Harpoonist - vocals and harmonica) and Matthew Rogers (the Axe Murderer - guitar). Shawn Hall and Matthew Rogers met at a jingle recording session in 2006. Hall worked for Citytv and Rogers was/is a film composer. They discovered they had a mutual affinity for a multitude of musical genres, but mainly folk and blues. The band began as a folk duo and their sound continued to evolve into a bigger, more electric sound. The two met and bonded over music while in a recording session for a radio jingle, and named their new project after the blues harp reference lyric "I took my harpoon out of my dirty red bandana" from Kris Kristofferson's "Bobby McGee," as well as the common reference to a guitar as an "axe." Vocalist and harmonicist Shawn—the Harpoonist—and guitarist Matt—the Axe Murderer—truly hit their stride and found their sound on 2012's "Checkered Past." Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer received a Sirius XM Indie award in 2013 for Blues Artist of the Year. In 2014, they were nominated for a JUNO for their album "A Real Fine Mess." They have had their songs featured on television shows such as CSI, NCIS New Orleans, The Good Wife, Blue Bloods, and the TV movie "Lizzie Borden Took an Ax." Their acoustic performances showcase the raw, stripped-down essence of their blues-influenced sound, highlighting the interplay between harmonica and guitar in intimate settings.
