About

Ghostkeeper is a Canadian experimental pop/rock band led by Shane Ghostkeeper, who writes most of the songs, and includes members Sarah Houle, drummer Eric Hamelin, and bassist Ryan Bourne. Their songs combine elements of '60s girl-group melodies, country music, '90s indie rock, African pop, and traditional Aboriginal pow wow music. Ghostkeeper's father is Metis and his mother has Cree and Saulteaux heritage. Shane grew up on the Metis settlement of Paddle Prairie, Alberta, eight hours north of Edmonton. Shane Ghostkeeper and Sarah Houle are partners in life, art, and music. Shane came to music late in life after high school. Ghostkeeper's debut album "Children of the Great Northern Muskeg" was released on Saved by Radio in July 2008 in Canada. The band's second album, titled "Ghostkeeper," was released in March 2010 by Flemish Eye Records. The band's learning experience allowed them to focus a light on the modern Metis experience, and Ghostkeeper really romanticizes and glorifies the Metis experience. Ghostkeeper's artistic agenda is to become better musicians, achieve label support, increase their audience, and dig deeper into a reflection on both the historical and modern Metis people's participation in artistic culture. In 2023, Shane Ghostkeeper released his debut solo album "Songs for My People," which was a longlisted nominee for the 2024 Polaris Music Prize. Ghostkeeper's music is characterized by its unique blend of Indigenous influences, indie rock sensibilities, and experimental approach.
