Audrey Ochoa is one of Edmonton's most prolific jazz trombonists, recognized as a rising star in the international jazz scene. Her father Romeo is a Filipino trumpeter who has played with Tommy Banks and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, and her mother Phyllis plays accordion, providing a musical foundation from childhood. She studied classical trombone at the University of Alberta and has shared stages with Hilario Duran, PJ Perry, and Tommy Banks, as well as international greats Lew Tebackin, Marcus Miller, Chris Potter, and the UNT One O'Clock Lab Band. She has toured with the Tony Award-winning musical "Hadestown," appearing on "The Late Show with James Corden." In 2020, she won the Western Canadian Music Award (WCMA) for Jazz Artist of the Year. She won the Jazz Recording of the Year award at the 2018 Edmonton Music Awards and the 2018 Edmonton Music Prize. She was a Western Canadian Music Award nominee in 2019. Her fourth album "The Head of a Mouse" was nominated for the 2025 JUNO Award for solo jazz album of the year. She was recently featured as a "Rising Star" in the Trombone category of the 2024 DownBeat Critics poll, cementing her status as one of Canada's leading jazz instrumentalists. Ochoa's playing is characterized by technical prowess, expressive range, and a commitment to both traditional jazz values and contemporary innovation.
