About

Van Django was formed in 1998 and specializes in gypsy jazz music. Their music is well-rooted in the gypsy jazz of 1930s Paris France, but features flights of dazzling fancy, driving rhythms and boundless creativity, featuring original compositions and arrangements including humorous mash-ups. Since their formation, they have toured extensively in Canada as well as international forays to the US, Europe and China. The group has had repeat performances at Djangofest Northwest (DFNW) in 2008-2016 sharing the stage with gypsy jazz luminaries such as the John Jorgenson Quintet and the legendary gypsy jazz guitarist Romane. The band has released 4 CDs: Tiptoe Trip, Waltz in the Shape of a Tree, Hotel Europe and a Christmas CD with special guests titled Cool Yule. Their albums have been well received and played on many radio stations including CBC, RDI, Espace Musique, NPR and Lyric FM in Ireland. Van Django are past nominees for Best Acoustic Group at the National Jazz Awards, and they have played Montreal Jazz Festival and TD Toronto Jazz Festival. Van Django's virtuosic musicianship, playful approach to gypsy jazz, and ability to honor the Django Reinhardt tradition while bringing contemporary creativity have made them one of Canada's premier gypsy jazz ensembles. Their energetic performances and technical brilliance consistently delight audiences and fellow musicians alike.
