Tara MacLean was born Tara Margaret Charity MacLean on October 25, 1973 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. She was born and raised in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island on the east coast of Canada, and is the eldest of four children. She was raised everywhere from the Caribbean to Toronto to the UK, and began performing as a child, and at 11 made her television debut alongside her singer/dancer father. All four children were pulled from their burning home in May 1987 by Constable David Cheverie, who was awarded for bravery and received the Cross of Valour for saving their lives. She has been an internationally renowned and award winning recording and touring artist for over 25 years, releasing her first album with the Nettwerk Music Group in 1996 and Sony Music Publishing Canada. She was discovered by two Nettwerk employees on the top deck of one of the Gulf Islands ferries singing with some friends. Her hit solo songs include Evidence, If I Fall, and a cover of Light of the Stable. She collaborated with fellow artists Kim Stockwood and Damhnait Doyle in a group named Shaye, which was a tribute to MacLean's sister who died in a car accident in 2002. Tara recently released her first book with HarperCollins, chronicling her life in music, accompanied by a new album, Sparrow, serving as the soundtrack to her written words. Tara MacLean is an environmental and social justice activist, a zen student, a poet, author and a playwright. Her powerful voice, heartfelt songwriting, and commitment to using her platform for positive change have made her a respected figure in Canadian music.
