The Sweet Lowdown is an amazingly talented folk and roots music trio based on Vancouver Island, B.C. This group skillfully blends the vocals and instrumentals of Amanda Blied (guitar), Miriam Sonstenes (fiddle), and Tad Ruszel (mandolin), though the band has undergone lineup changes over the years. The Sweet Lowdown's debut album was nominated for Album of the Year at the Vancouver Island Music Awards in 2012. Winners of the 2013 Island Roots Album of the Year (Vancouver Island Music Awards) for May, the band also received a Canadian Folk Music Awards nomination in 2013 for Vocal Group of the Year. With the rough waters of the Pacific around them and the wilds of the Canadian North above them, Amanda, Miriam and Tad of THE SWEET LOWDOWN have developed original acoustic music that draws from earth and sky. You'll hear influences as far-ranging as Appalachian fiddling, contemporary pop, Celtic jigs and that particular Canadian blend of driving tradition and ground-breaking originality. Originally, the group consisted of Amanda Blied on guitar, Shanti Bremer on banjo, and Miriam Sonstenes on fiddle. However, Banjo player Shanti Bremer left the project in 2017, and the band was later joined by Tad Ruszel. Vancouver Island-based folk band The Sweet Lowdown have been nominated for a 2020 Canadian Folk Music Award for their newly released EP, Low Clouds in the Morning (2019). The Sweet Lowdown's intricate harmonies, virtuosic instrumental work, and ability to blend traditional and contemporary influences have made them a standout act in the Vancouver Island music scene.
