Ryan Boldt (The Deep Dark Woods)
ActiveAbout
Ryan Boldt is the lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter for Saskatchewan folk-roots band The Deep Dark Woods. His distinctive weathered voice and evocative songwriting have been the band's defining characteristics since their formation in 2005. Boldt's solo and acoustic performances strip back the full band sound to reveal the heart of his songwriting—narratives steeped in prairie imagery, themes of isolation, love, and loss. The Deep Dark Woods have released five studio albums, earning critical acclaim and Juno nominations. Their 2013 album 'The Place I Left Behind' was longlisted for the Polaris Music Prize. Boldt's influences include traditional country, folk, and blues, combined with a literary approach to lyrics that has drawn comparisons to Leonard Cohen and Gordon Lightfoot. He continues to tour and record with The Deep Dark Woods while occasionally performing solo shows that highlight his songwriting craft and understated vocal delivery.
