Sarah Davachi, born in 1987, is a Canadian composer and performer of electroacoustic and minimalist music. Born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, she is a pianist and an organist. Davachi holds a bachelor's degree in philosophy from the University of Calgary and a master's degree in electronic music and recording media from Mills College in Oakland, California. She's currently completing her Ph.D. in musicology at UCLA, where she is based in Los Angeles, California, USA. When she was 20, while still living in Calgary, she gained employment as a tour guide at a musical instrument museum, where she had access to acoustic and electronic keyboard instruments. Between 2007 and 2017, Davachi worked at Calgary's National Music Centre as an interpreter, content developer, and archivist. This experience proved foundational to her musical development, as she was free to fiddle around with harpsichords, ondes martenot, clavichords, chamberlins, and basically any vintage synthesizer you can think of. Her work is concerned with the close intricacies of timbral and temporal space, utilizing extended durations and considered harmonic structures that emphasize gradual variations. She is one of the most prominent contemporary artists in the fields of minimalism, ambient, and drone music. Her first full-length LP release, Barons Court, was released in 2015. Notable subsequent releases include Vergers in 2016, Pale Bloom in 2019, and Cantus, Descant released in September 2020. In 2024, Davachi released Long Gradus, a triple album of solo pipe organ works. Davachi also works as a musicologist, exploring organology, phenomenology, and timbre.
