Loscil is the electronic music project of Canadian composer and multimedia artist Scott Morgan, based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Morgan launched the Loscil project in Vancouver in 1998 while a member of the multimedia collective Multiplex, which curated audiovisual events at an underground cinema called The Blinding Light. Loscil graduated from Simon Fraser University's School for the Contemporary Arts, where he studied with computer-music pioneer Barry Truax. The name Loscil is taken from the "looping oscillator" function (loscil) in Csound. For over 20 years, Morgan has built a robust catalogue of work under the loscil moniker, loosely spanning the genres of ambient, classical, and electroacoustic music. Since the late 1990s, Morgan has released dozens of recordings under the Loscil moniker, mostly through the respected indie label Kranky based in Portland, Oregon. Morgan was also the drummer for the Vancouver indie band Destroyer. As Loscil, he has produced numerous special projects, remixes, and collaborations with other musicians, including Ryuichi Sakamoto, Murcof/Vanessa Wagner, Sarah Neufeld, Daniel Bejar, bvdub, Rachel Grimes, and Kelly Wyse. Morgan has composed for film and television and licensed music to bold documentaries, including "The Corporation," "Scared Sacred," "Damnation," "Enlighten Us," "Abandoned," and The Marshall Project's award-winning series "We Are Witnesses." Loscil's atmospheric, textured soundscapes have established him as a leading figure in ambient and electronic music.
